Universal has since agreed to remove the joke from the movie under pressure from GLAAD, but Vaughn thinks it should stay, saying:
"Let me add my voice of support to the people outraged by the bullying and persecution of people for their differences, whatever those differences may be. Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Drawing dividing lines over what we can and cannot joke about does exactly that; it divides us. Most importantly, where does it stop."
So, do you buy Vaughn's argument? Do you think removing a gay slur from a movie "divides" us?
Personally, I think his particular argument is weak, but I do agree that it's dangerous to go around policing dialogue in movies. Fictional characters, like real people, are all kinds of things, including racist, bigoted, ignorant, indifferent, and just plain tactless, and the words they say need to reflect those characteristics.
I do think, given our current social climate, it was pretty stupid to include that "joke" in the previews, though. Your thoughts?
