According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the key causes of the global obesity epidemic are increased consumption of energy-dense foods high in saturated fats and sugars, and reduced physical activity due to rapid urbanization. Currently over 1 billion adults are overweight and at least 300 million of them are clinically obese. Excess weight and obesity lead to adverse metabolic impact on blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, and insulin resistance. Some of these negative effects in turn redouble the propensity for weight gain.
