Plextor has shaken up the SSD market by announcing its new M3 Pro range of solid-state drives at this year's CES. The 2.5-inch models squeeze into a 7mm-high shell, making them suitable for ultrabooks. The Plextor M3 Pro will be available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB sizes. The Japanese component-maker will begin shipping the devices in February although no details of pricing have been announced.

Asus and Nvidia have set conference tongues wagging with a preview of a quad-core Tegra 3-packing 7-inch tablet that they claim will sell for $250. This tablet is the Asus Memo 370T, an upgraded version of the 7-inch Memo which debuted at the last CES in 2011. The previous version featured a dualcore Qualcomm 1.2GHz CPU and had Android Honeycomb as its OS, whereas the souped-up Memo 370T will boast a quadcore CPU and run Android Ice Cream Sandwich to move with the times.
Just as Intel is muscling in on the smartphone market with its long-overdue Medfield Atom chips, Qualcomm is attempting to strike back at the x86 territory, so long domnated by Intel. Qualcomm Snapdragon processor is currently the processor of choice in more than 300 handsets and tablets, and will soon be seen in another 300, but Windows 8's support for ARM architecture has led Qualcomm to switch its focus to the lucrative ultrabook market.

Dell is showcasing a new ultrabook, the XPS 13 at the CES in Las Vegas. First impressions are that it's incredibly compact. Although it offers the typical 13.3-inch display found on most other ultrabooks, XPS 13 measures just 32 x 21cm with a thickness tapering from 18mm down to 6mm.

Acer's newest addition showcased at CES in LasVegas, the Acer Iconia Tab A700 is the second quad-core tablet to date, and will ship with Ice Cream Sandwich. And as for the display, Acer has somehow squeezed 1925 x 1200 pixels onto the display, which translates as vibrant images and 1080p playback.

LG has unveiled its Spectrum smartphone at CES in Las Vegas, a slim contoured handset with a 4.5-inch display. The 4.5-inch HD IPS LCD display display images in Retina-quality detail - the LG Spectrum features a sharpness of 329ppi, just pipping the iPhone 4S 326ppi.

Toshiba has launched its new Excite X10 tablet, which will be offered with either 16GB or 32GB storage, for $529 and $599 respectively. The Excite X10 features a 10.1-inch display with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. It's a mere 7.7mm thick, which is a departure from the slightly clumsy and chunky Thrive family of tablets recently released by Toshiba.

Intel announced today that up to 60 slender ultrabooks will come to market this year and praised the combination of convenience and performance offered by the ultrabook format. The ultrabook form factor follows a tight set of criteria, including quick boot times, a full keyboard, svelte dimensions, and initially they were required to bear Intel i-series processors, though we expect to see AMD CPUs soon.
Canadian manufacturer RIM is at CES 2012 trumpeting an upcoming PlayBook refresh, which will become downloadable from next month. PlayBook 2 attempts to iron out many of the bugs in the original PlayBook. Email will at long last be offered on the 7-inch Blackberry tablet, with a whole bunch of email management tools including a unified inbox with integration for social networking, tabbed emails, rich text emailing, and a multi-account search.
